1 word: Supergroups
Supergroups have to come to dominate the end of the year in music. Them crooked vultures and chickenfoot, in particular. IMO supergroups are just a ploy for the artist in them to make more money, when their real band is on a break. I feel super groups just put out music that is not as great as what the band normal produces. I feel that most super groups put out music that is about as good as some underground stuff. The only reason that superground pack the concert venues is because they have already establish rock stars in them. Chickenfoot is terrible and i don't understand why there was so much hype. Most people found that out after their CD was released. Im not a fan of Them Crooked Vulture, either. I love what Josh Homme does in Queens of the Stone Age.
QOTSA has its own unique sound made by down tuned guitars, techincal drum beat, and a very 'unique' way of doing guitar solo's. I feel QOTSA took what Stone Temple Pilots started and expanded on it. Same heavy guitar type sound, mixed with bizzarre solo's and mixed it with a higher pitch voice and more technical drums based around fills. Now Homme is trying to take this Queens of the Stone Age style and mix it with Grohls, most decidedly Nirvana style druming (hmm i wounder why?). Problem is that those 2 don't mix at all. The down tuned guitar get drowned out by john paul and his bass, and seriously, who ever mixed this cd needs to never mixc a CD again. This has to have been the worst mixed CD i've ever heard. Its too hard to distingush what is going on musically on the CD. I mean all I hear from the drums is the snare.
Its all just a ploy for these guys to make more money, when in reality the music isn't great. This music industry is all about the money. I can say that from first hand experience. Its not about how good you are anymore, its just "give me my money." And these artist and label go with super groups because in short they make more money. I feel that a supergroups spot on a label could be better served going to an indie band that has far more potential than a super group. Super Groups ALWAYS fail. Cream is a perfect example. Egos lead to their demise. What happens when their real band go back out on tour? Their Done. Ego's Clash? Done. Unfortunately this a small glimpse of the bigger picture, that the fail of last decade music has been. I challenge readers to name 1 good band that became popular on radio, that was formed in the 00's. I know, besides Paramore and Kings of Leon, who by what im thinking isn't coincident are from the same city, that there has been any! Im going to keep a very hopeful eye on Nashville the next couple of years, cause imo they may save us from subpar music.
